Mera Bharat Mahan

patriotism is a strange thing.ask an indian.he will count days and tell you exactly when he feels "patriotic".it will vary anywhere between five and ten.
though,i suspect that many people might consider ogling at sania and her assets as major "patriotism"!
independence day seemed big this year.we apparently had completed 60 years of 'independence' and thus the jubilation.the honourable PM saab gave illustrious examples of how much progress the nation had made in all these years.while he indulged his eloquence, half the populace slaved away in call centres, banks,IT firms et al.it is mandatory to work on the independence day.the country needs your labour.and thus SLAVE YOU MUST!
it is sheer irony if you come to think of it.would-be johnsons and jessicas clad in kurta pajama/saree selling cheap labour, speaking chaste english so that you doubt if 'george mackenzie' is actually the same old ramachandra krishnamurthy hailing from the remote village in kerala.
patriotism sells.films with super-deshbhakti-mush hit the jackpot at box office.its the safest bet.it projects the new age india-the coming of time india.with her youth standing up against injustice.boy oh boy!if that is not a good plot, what is?
its incredible how we have come so far and yet somewhere it seems as if we never advanced.like as if india has been stuck in this time warp all this while.
the intelligentsia might ponder over debates as to whether the colonialists did us any good.
my point is,have we?
have we really progressed in all these 60 years?what we call economic boom or india shining for that matter is nothing but a repitition of colonialism .ofcourse this time 'they' coined a diplomatic term and called it globalisation.so super malls and multiplexes come flood the country, thereby driving the entire indegenous market out of business.its a brandised nation.this.but major illitearcy prevails.so does poverty.while a meagre 10% feeds on big mac burgers and fried chickens, lakhs go unfed for days.
india still boasts of such malpractises as dowry.and sati continues in some nooks and crannies of Rajasthan,U.P and the like.
you tell me stories about women's empowerment.about girls working and standing on "their own feet".and i will tell you stories of rape, female infanticide, child abuse, eve teasing and casting couches.
the girl next door might work in a big-weeg multinational company but coax her and she will relate how she had to walk/sing/dance/undo her hair/skin before her would be in-laws finalised the marriage.
the science teacher in your college might propound a hell lot of scientific bullshit and yet you will find him wearing that shiny silver amulet around the arm.
a country which proclaims herself "secular" and yet is most vulnerable in matters related to religion.while a pious muslim prays five times a day and indulges in violence all in the name of the holy koran, hindu ladies line up infront of the mandir on shivaratri to worship what is nothing short of a phallus!
a fanatic nation caught up between cricket and bollywood, the country unanimously mourns the conviction of munnabhai as also rejoices the triumph against england.
a country that remains immersed in flood half the year and threatened by the evil forces of terrorism the other.
a country where politicians crossvote, conspire, corrupt and exploit their posts all in the name of the 'janta'.

i came across an article where the author voiced genuine concern regarding indian state of affairs.
"if we are to believe India achieves 60 years of independence this year",the author quipped,"should we assume that the country will retire soon?"

worth a thought.eh,gentlemen?

worth a thought....actually...but giving her time she will grow...ours is still a baby compared to other countries..problem is being so young she is also vulnerable...towards exploitation and corruption dat is what is being done...its for us i guess to take more interest in politics...and whats happening to our nation...but how many of us do that frankly??

Its all a farce..its a sham..a mockery of independence or whatever we are celebrating.
Our country will change.Sometime or the other it will.
Its just the cheap thrills, the politics, the society...somehow those have to all change...

hmm..points noted.but c'mon!India has come a long way.its aint a baby any more.had there been any chance for devolopment it would have reared its hopeful head by now.has it??HAS IT??
i know i know.there is so much goddamn farce happenning in the name of politics.fanfare and cheap thrills.i wish powerr also had inflation.that way too much power would still boil down to nothing much thereby compelling men to give up on it.
ah!the sheer bliss!

eto cynicism kano re?
100 evils. yes.
but 1 good, perhaps. somewhere?

to tell you frankly, i am tired of precisely the same tone of articles around me. there are 1000 problems, yes. but somewhere down the line, 1 problem perhaps, got solved. let's not be complacent about that. but let's not be SO disillusioned that we lose the enthusiasm to work. move forward even.

i would beg to disagree with march hare.... india is moving fast. too fast. globalisation has hit it in a wrong way...its unstrategic globalisation my friend...u talk like those "bhorsha thakuk" ministers...the communist party cried "yeh azadi jhootha hae"...u see the nuke deal, the kashmir and the jammu, (who are being used by india n pakistan since our independece), BPo...
look daddy, i we love india, but first of all have to be critical in order toi make it better... if we have a geometric progression of 1000 probbs and a single good thing, then think abt the next generations....we have the responsibility, thats starts with dissatisfaction...
go give GRE...n move to the land of dreams....who cares abt india where 1 good is happenign...the mother can make her own meal...huh?

i am amazed at people like mojo....
there are people who remain happy in their own way of blogging and percieving the world as a happy place with a very blossoming life as "...happily ever after". its an intellectual luxury really to get disdainly philosophical as feeling something listening to the doors or reading Petrarch or chanting Shakespeare or humming a Robindro Songeet...there are peole who are devoid of their historicity, their politics, and they remain globbed inside their consumerist heaven of leading a good urban life....
original technique depends not on a two liner inexplicable feeling that tinkles a teen or an adolescent....and in order to do constructive things, u have to SEE where we lack...
this may be hackneyed for people who are "content" with the surroundings...i feel its selfishness...

@anon - firstly, which amongst the following are you actually dissing?
listening to the doors or reading Petrarch or chanting Shakespeare or humming a Robindro songeet
and if you are not actually dissing any one of these, why bring them up in the first place? It just dilutes the point you are trying to put across.
I refuse to be unhappy because i love doing almost all that you mentioned above.

And secondly, I don't think you are getting my point. There are drawbacks to this country, I agree. Heck, I agree wholeheartedly. But, I also believe that not all is bad. I don't believe that there has not been a SINGLE proud moment for the country since it's independence. And, just on the 15th of August, perhaps, I would rather focus on that tiny amount of goodness, RATHER than on the mountains of negatives. I am NOT being complacent here. Neither am I disregarding the fact that a lot remains to be done. But on my country's independence day, I refuse to dwell on it. There are 364 other days to think and act on this subject.

And why on EARTH did the GRE issue come up? Why does EVERYTHING have to be US against THEM?

And lastly, like mojo, I refuse to be ashamed because I am happy. And I refuse to be ungrateful to the govt. (which with its 1 million atrocities and drawbacks) still provides me with a basic infrastructure for living.

tell me frankly dear. You watch too much of bollywood right? I mean , dont mind, your thoughts are reeking of Rang De Basanti. you actually feel its easy and filmy to kill a minister as RDG has portrayed. Trust me boy, you can't even move a hair. sad it may sound. but thats the truth.

I mean, what are you doing?? ranting against GRE, vehemently lashing at people who are actually reading, cracking GRE, going abroad, working hard and earning 'money'. And you are??? sitting in your smug little room, typing on a ...er.. probably a laptop or a computer. You did not even move your eavy arse buddy.

its easier said than done..., go and crack IAS and then come and rant.

@ onnesha : what you call cheap labour can be translated into "employment" for several thousands of people. also, if you're going to judge progress by the least number of rapes in a country, then i'm sfraid you'd better turn to another planet.
look, we all know what goes on in this country, and you can hardly prove your awareness by bitching about it. how about actually Doing something for a change instead of constantly bashing the happy shiny people?

I have TWO problems with the above statement.

1. You AUTOMATICALLY assume I will be going abroad. Which I NEVER said I would. And assuming that, you ALSO automatically assume that once I go, I would never come back. I resent that. I resent baseless assumptions. And I resent needless comments based on that. And let us, for the sake of argument, SAY that I go abroad. Do you HAVE any right to be SO vitriolic towards my effort. Of studying and cracking an important exam? It takes QUITE a lot of effort to crack GRE. And said that, WHY ON EARTH would you automatically assume that going abroad for further studies means that one doesn't feel/do ANYTHING for one's own country? Would you rather I sit here and do nothing? Would staying back really help then?

2. Je amake ashroy diyeche tar kharap dhorie debo na, ekbaaro bolechi ki? I CATEGORICALLY stated that I BELIEVE THERE ARE 1000 DRAWBACKS TO THIS COUNTRY. I just DON'T believe that EVERYTHING is bad. Bhul dhorie dao na. Tar songe kichhu bhalo kothao bolo. And as I ALREADY said, I REFUSE to believe that India never had one proud moment in it's 60 years of independence.

@onnesha - good post. very very valid points. forces us to take a long hard look at ourselves. i mean we as a people are rather incongrous aren't we? "lenin er padodeshe pronami'r thala" said chandrabindoo.

but things aren't all that bad are they? i mean, quite a few of us manage to have a good life. remember the old man at the end of saving private ryan? when he's all teary eyed and choking and says "i've tried my best to live a good life" i mean that kind of good life. cheer up mate! things can only get better.

i always try and remeber this one line that i once saw on a staff motivational poster in the someplace else kitchen - "SMILE, IT'S GOOD TO BE ALIVE"

on a lighter note, what do you call a rodent with no name? anonymouse!!!

i think u have fundamental probs u see... u confuse cheap labour with employment. blasphemy would be a light word..
cynicism ki bojho? who said that the nation is doomed (was i tlking abt ur mind? huh? lolz!) ?
talking about crisis is cynicism?...i am amazed that there are people who are devoid of historicity, of their crisis. Bhopal gas tragedy, kashmir, godhra, manipur, babri...is that a crime to talk about this?? if you do not want to then dont..u cant go on attack people, rite dear??
and yes cheap labour : the cost of work for indians are lower. and that the outsourcing thing is nothing but exploiting our own people. but yes, employment is a big question so we are swallowing the bitter pill..that was the point all about dear!!!!i hope u r getting the point now!
and yes, firstly make sure u know the people u r talking about, and then comment...
"awareness by bitching"? its not girly talks that talking about the nation and its crisis is bitching. then marx or ghatak or gandhi and all the freedom fighters were bitchy...rite???
look, again i am stating it clearly: the first path is to make an attempt to see whats going on, then take actions..consciousness comes from crisis, from observation.
then taenaman square, and all the movements are cynical acts against "happy shiny people", rite?
people should teach you:

@everybody.
this was initially written with a lot of angst.what with the system going majorly haywire, the blog was the best way to express my feelings.i kept a tab on all the comments, though i refrained from commenting since i believed that i have said what i have in the post itself.infact,i wouldnt be lying if i said i was cherishing the kind of debate this otherwise inconsequential just-another-post had conjured.
but i feel this has gone a tad too far since we have far digressed the topic we started out with.the issue,if i am correct was whether we have made enough progress and if there is any room left for us to progress in.
the comments have hardly anything to do with the original post anymore.people are hurling personal abuses which prompted me to delete some of the offensive posts.
i have a philosophy.u need to criticise a person, look into its basic flaws and then only can you get down to actually sorting things out.i see people are content with whatever their country has given them.i am not.and that is precisely because i KNOW india is capable of doing better.basking in its glory and remaining "happy" would only capture its progress and growth.the growth hasnt reached the optimum.
being critical helps.and that is entirely my own opinion.
i have been floored by your overwhelming response.
but i hereby close this forum from any further discussion.
thank you.

And so many displaced and misdirected vitriol!
And so many boys and girls who will be calmer tomorrow!
And the font so tiny!
And the bloggers so bright!

Despair:
the same hackneyed way of reacting to the national shitdom which changes colors, probably we need a fresh way of reacting to things, kids...probably Gods are laughing up there 'coz our languages are already rendered impotent...
Destiny & Death:
Stop them! Reverse! Remain forever young! 'Coz within a few years you might stop talking like above...hurry!!!
Delirium:
Can't one love the country without loving August the 15th?
Isn't only a middle-class morpheus assuming that if s/he remains indifferent and passive, the 'nation' will surely drive to the drains? The real sufferer on the streets doesn't assume this...and mind you, they are real, we are hyperreal!
Remaining smug and happy isn't a crime...it is plain ignorance.
Sulking high doesn't mean that the state of the nation is rotten...just your mood is screwed up.
Desire One day each of these rants above will matter, might provoke shutting down blogging as it is happening in Turkey...
Destruction and Dream The day a Phoenix rises...from my ashes!

That's not just wordplay, bros and sisters...In a condition where things muddle up like above...one can burn up the way one is, (metaphorically, I mean!), no good assuming that I - critical or celebratory - am absolutely correct; negate yourself in each alternate lines. One may be sure, something new will be born...being self-critical does not necessarily mean being nihilistic!

But how long the show must go on?!

@onnesha: yes we have digressed from the basic point, largely because of rough cut cinema and his utterly mindless comments,(liberally sprinkled with spelling and syntactical mistakes, regularly punctuated with haha hoho and 'wows!').but i will not waste any more time on someone so incorrigibly illogical. what i wanted to say is that what you are trying to say in your post is not incorrect or inaccurate but unoriginal and "oporbhasha"!you fail to go to the root of the matter, your post is badly argued, you are neither perceptive, nor analytical. your writing lacks the basic quality of readbility and your sarcasm falls flat on its face. the point you try to make has been made (in a better manner too) by thousands before you. and lastly i would like to ask what are you doing to get our nation a "work extension"(to continue the pathetic analogy)?apart from blogging, that is....

@life's elsewhere - why sandman, all of a sudden? :O

you say this is not 'wordplay'. i say it is. because, once you take away desire, destiny and everything neil gaiman-ish, what remains is a hackneyed viewpoint. hardly original.

@march hare and anonymous

Granted! I had been hackneyed and patronising...so I would rather watch...

But please tell me...can we find some more effective language? Which can provoke actions? Other ways of reacting to issues which plague us so much?

At least I had been consciously hackneyed and unoriginal (using Gaiman)...

My words weren't 'wordplays' dear frnd...only I knew its words and words only...sound and fury signifying something...

Sandman, 'coz we are really in the realm of endless in this longish post-logue

nice, hard-hitting...
very, very nice... although not surprising given you are from one of the earliest parts of India that has seen emancipation and rationality...

like Denmark, Norway (around 70% or more atheists), and UK (more than 50% of the Britons)... only Bengal and Kerala can boast of some people who have seen some light... and not the one willed by God...light that lights up the dark bylanes of one's mind
